Stormé DeLarverie's Impact

Stormé DeLarverie (1923-2014):

a true icon with an unwavering

commitment to justice and equality.

  • A biracial, lesbian whose gender expression did not follow norms nor limited labels of the time.

  • A guardian and connector in LGBTQ+ communities and an integral part of key cultural moments.

  • Emcee, stage manager, and performer in the Jewel Box Revue - an interracial, gay, gender non-conforming cast of gender impersonators.

  • A protector with a significant role in the Stonewall Rebellion.

  • A historical figure who exemplifies the complexity of navigating personal intersecting identities (i.e., race, ethnicity, gender expression, and sexual orientation)
in the 20th century, who lived her true self even when outside societal boundaries.

  • A fierce protector and an example of how cultivating a sense of belonging for self, as well as others, is foundational to one's well-being.
